Everyone has dealbreakers that would keep them from dating someone, and it turns out, debt is a big one for a lot of people. It seems money is now more than just a practical concern for singles; it’s a compatibility factor. According to a new survey, 78% of Americans consider short-term debt, like personal loans and credit cards, a relationship red flag.

The research from personal finance company Achieve finds that for a lot of people, how much someone owes can affect whether they’ll date them at all.

Nearly half (45%) say they wouldn’t date someone who owes $25-thousand in short-term debt, but for 28% the amount is much lower at just $10-thousand.
Only 22% say debt wouldn’t keep them from getting into a relationship with someone.
Women are more likely than men to say debt is a dealbreaker (80% versus 74%), while divorced respondents were the most cautious (86%).
The majority of those polled feel the money talk should happen early in a relationship. Almost three-quarters (72%) believe debt should be discussed within the first six months of dating, but 16% expect it in the first month. A third think between one and three months is fine and a quarter feel four to six months is ideal.
Maybe more surprising is that 85% think people should be upfront about their debt. And 60% say they’d end a relationship if they found out their partner was hiding debt.
Dating someone with debt is one thing, but when it comes to marriage, expectations are higher.
Nearly three-quarters (73%) expect a partner’s debt to be paid down before saying “I do.”
While 55% say they’d help a partner pay it off, 68% admit they wouldn’t want to pay off debt racked up before their relationship.
Regardless of how much debt anyone came into the relationship with, 67% say they would end it if their partner didn’t contribute financially to household expenses, savings goals and long-term plans.
