Colin Angle is a pioneer in the tech world who co-founded the company iRobot, maker of the Roomba vacuum. His new company just unveiled something different — a "companion robot" designed to keep you company and curb loneliness. This four-legged friend can move its head in 23 different ways — and it even has a touch-sensitive coat made for petting. And instead of creepy machine voice, this thing communicates through purrs and pet-like noises, using built-in AI to learn your personality and react to your moods.

According to a new study, 80% of companies that have been laying off employees because of AI haven't seen an increase in their return on investment. The big idea, of course, is to cut labor costs. But it seems that the lower costs don't result in a boost to the bottom line. This has led to some experts suggesting that things could actually turn around — and AI will end up leading to more jobs, not less.

In what will probably be known as “The Great Weiner Heist,” two suspects snuck onto the campus of University High School in Orange City, Florida, at around 1 am on Thursday, slipped through an unlocked door, and got away with approximately 100 hot dogs and ice cream valued at about $60, along with some lanyards and an Allen wrench set. Along the way, they also messed with bicycles and equipment belonging to the school's ESE program, with the entire operation taking about 23 minutes. Police are still searching for the two unidentified males, who were seen jumping a fence near the gym. A parent of a student at the school said he hopes the suspects face consequences "so they know to nip it in the bud while they're young."

Federal prosecutors say a 73‑year‑old Florida veteran is looking at 10 years in prison for faking blindness for several years so that he could collect $245,000 in VA benefits. Jerry Smith pleaded guilty to falsely claiming he was blind to receive disability payments. He committed this fraud from 2017 to 2021. Investigators eventually looked into his claims and discovered that he was actually able to drive, read, and work. He even held jobs as a school security guard and a firearms specialist -- both professions which require pretty good eyesight. Smith now faces up to ten years in federal prison, with sentencing still pending. (Yahoo News)

In South Africa, the plan, apparently, was to create a nationwide policy concerning artificial intelligence. That policy was withdrawn, however, when it was learned that a portion of that policy was “written by AI, using fictional sources.” Oops. Of the 67 academic citations in the policy, six were found to be “AI hallucinations, mentioning journal articles that didn’t exist.”
