What do moms want besides gifts this year?

The poll of 2-thousand American moms of kids under 19 asks what they actually want and truly need this year. According to mothers across the country, you can’t even buy the number one thing on their wish list. That’s because 42% of moms say the number one thing they need is more personal time to rest and recharge, to help ease some of their day-to-day mental load.

And that’s not the only present they want that you can’t buy in stores. Moms would also like more help from family members (40%), and to not have to remind others about tasks and responsibilities (37%)

Better communication within their family (33%) is also on the wish list, and so are better follow-through from their kids (32%), and less responsibility in general (24%).

The mental load of parenting - from planning meals to organizing playdates to making sure literally everything gets done for the family - is weighing heavy on moms and they could use a break.

“Families need to start to share the load — ideally equally — or else mom will become more and more resentful,” says Priya Rajendra, CEO and co-founder of It’s A Family Thing, the group behind the survey. “Everyone in the family has to understand that moms shouldn’t be managing the household alone.”⠀

A man in China is recovering in the hospital after a metal chopstick became stuck in his throat -- and remained there for eight years. Doctors in the city of Dalian were stunned when a 46‑year‑old man, identified only as Mr. Wang, came to hospital complaining of severe throat pain. An X‑ray revealed a five-inch metal chopstick lodged deep in his throat. Even more shocking is that Mr. Wang knew exactly what it was. He told doctors he had accidentally swallowed the chopstick eight years earlier while eating. At the time, he felt choking and pain but could still breathe. Doctors warned surgery would be risky, so he decided to live with it instead. And for years, he did just that -- putting up with occasional discomfort and mostly forgetting the chopstick was even there. That changed recently, when sharp pain began waking him up in the mornings. Painkillers didn’t help, so he finally sought emergency treatment. Doctors found the chopstick had not caused major damage but warned it could have injured blood vessels or surrounding tissue at any time. Using a minimally invasive procedure, surgeons carefully removed the chopstick through his mouth. Doctors say he’s now recovering well. (OddityCentral)
