The next time a foul odor wafts past your nose and makes you cringe, you might want to think about how it is affecting your health — because it is. Scientists say bad smells affect your physical health, your mood, and even how you live your life. For people living near landfills, sewage works, or factories, bad odors can cause nausea, headaches, poor sleep, and anxiety. Scientists explain that smell evolved as an early warning system, so the brain reacts to foul odors in milliseconds, triggering stress and physical discomfort meant to keep us safe. The problem is, when the smell never goes away, that constant alert state can wear people down. It can stop them exercising, socializing, or even opening windows on hot days. Over time, that can damage both physical and mental well-being. And studies show that people in lower income communities are at greater risk for these effects because they are more likely to live near sources of odor pollution.
