Feel like you always act weird and mess up horribly on first dates? It’s not just you, a lot of us do, but the thing is, these are highly stressful, anxiety-filled situations that make it hard to be yourself. Add in the fact that you’re going out with someone who’s practically a stranger, but one you might actually like, and it can be one of the most stressful experiences we have.
“Most people show up hoping to be chosen,” dating expert Nadia Edwards explains. “They’re focused on making a good impression, saying the right thing and creating chemistry. What they forget is that they’re there to gather information. The goal of a first date is not to get chosen. It’s to decide whether you want to choose them.”
These are the most common mistakes people make on first dates, and how to avoid them, according to dating experts.
You don’t know what you’re looking for - You have to know what you want and what matters to you to know if it’s right in front of you. “Chemistry can tell you if you’re interested,” Edwards says. “It can’t tell you whether you’re aligned.” She adds that a first date doesn’t need to tell you if someone is your future partner, only if you want to know more about them.
You’re talking too much and not listening enough - It’s normal to be nervous, which can make us talk more, but you don’t want to be the only one talking. “When you’re anxious or really want to impress someone, you talk more, speed up and forget to be curious,” says Natassia Miller, DatingAdvice’s in-house sexologist. “The other person walks away feeling more like an audience than a potential partner.” Avoid that by asking open-ended questions and showing interest in getting to know your date.
You’re going on dates without an activity - A lot of dates involve sitting and eating or drinking, but online dating expert Eric Resnick suggests doing something that involves activity or movement instead. Having something to do, like going to the farmer’s market or playing mini golf, gives you the chance to “hang out in the wild and see if you get along” without the stress of staring at each other across a table.
Getting emotionally invested too quickly - One date, even if it’s a great one, isn’t enough to show you what a relationship with this person would look like.
Oversharing to force intimacy - Being open is good, but disclosing deeply personal stories right away can be more like dumping than sharing. Miller recommends sharing “in layers” and starting with lighter topics and letting deeper ones happen over time.
