Glasgow property taxpayers could see their street maintenance assessments increase by 15 percent next year.
The Glasgow City Council tentatively approved the increase Tuesday during a budget meeting. A final vote is expected at the council’s September meeting.
The increase would generate about 101-thousand-338 dollars in additional revenue for street repairs.
The current street assessment brings in about 675-thousand-587 dollars. With the 15-percent increase, that would rise to nearly 777-thousand dollars.
The increase would apply to both residential and commercial property taxpayers in Glasgow.
Commercial assessments would total about 432-thousand dollars, while residential assessments would increase to nearly 345-thousand dollars.
Council members unanimously agreed that a significant increase is needed because of the deteriorating condition of Glasgow’s streets.
The council also approved moving 25-thousand dollars from the city’s general fund into street maintenance.
That means the city would have approximately 126-thousand dollars in additional money available for street repairs and maintenance in the next budget year.
The 15-percent increase is still tentative, with the final decision expected in September.
