Vacation memories should include sunsets and souvenirs, not police reports. If you're choosing your next getaway, it might be worth considering how often property crimes happen while tourists are in town. Using FBI data from the summer of 2024, Vivint ranked 25 popular U.S. vacation destinations based on rates of burglary, larceny, and motor vehicle theft.

According to Vivint’s analysis, these are the safest summer destinations in the U.S. and the ratio of crimes to population during the peak summer travel season:

Park City, Utah (136 crimes per 100-thousand residents)
San Diego, California (139)
Santa Barbara, California (139)
Charleston, South Carolina (156)
West Palm Beach, Florida (158)
Boston, Massachusetts (181)
And these are the riskiest destinations in the U.S.:

Honolulu, HI (442 crimes per 100-thousand residents)
Seattle, WA (415)
Philadelphia, PA (408)
Denver, CO (401)
Nashville, TN (398)
San Antonio, TX (394)
The analysis also reveals:

Honolulu's overall rate was more than three times higher than Park City's, mostly because of a high number of thefts.
Miami saw the largest increase in property crime since 2022, climbing 60%.
West Palm Beach had the biggest improvement with a 34% drop.
Several California destinations, including San Francisco and Santa Barbara, also saw declines.
The numbers also highlight a few surprises. Even though Honolulu is one of the riskiest destinations on the list, its property crime rate has improved significantly since 2022.
Kansas City also stood out by recording the highest rate of motor vehicle theft among the destinations studied, making it a good reminder to stay alert and lock up your vehicle.
Wherever your travels take you, a little awareness can go a long way toward keeping your trip safe. Pack your sunscreen, keep an eye on your belongings, and you’ll have the best chance of coming home with nothing but great memories.

A new survey by Holiday Inn Express reveals that 33% of people jump out of bed when their alarm sounds in the morning. Other findings:

-37% of people hit the snooze button first thing in the morning 

-52% of people check their phone within minutes of waking up 

-3% of people avoid checking their phone when they wake up

-20% of people sit on the edge of their bed and process reality before standing up 

-36% of people drink coffee first thing in the morning

Manual transmissions are almost gone from the American car and truck market. For the 2025 model year, stick shifts made up only 0.6% of vehicles built for sale here in the U.S., compared to about 35% in 1980. But there are still options for holdouts who still enjoy driving stick, including certain vehicles from Cadillac, BMW, Ford, Honda, Jeep, Porsche, and Subaru — among others.

A refrigeration company in Japan has unveiled a human-sized cooling pod designed like a vending machine to combat extreme heat on construction sites, in warehouses, and at outdoor events. The Do Hiemon Box stands at just over 6 feet tall and holds an interior temperature of 59 degrees Fahrenheit while blasting air as cool as 41 degrees at the head, neck, shoulders, and back. A quick 5-to-10-minute session helps keep overheated workers safe, while costing only about 10 cents per hour.

United Press International says the city of Mount Dora, Florida is warning residents about wild monkeys in the area. The monkeys have been spotted near parks and shopping malls.  Mount Dora posted a warning on social media, asking people to admire the primates from a safe distance.

Guessing Headlights says a St Louis woman recently saved a turtle from a busy road. A video shows her daughters helping move the turtle to the side. An officer pulled her over and gave a ticket.

KGW says a Portland, Oregon man recently crashed into a Sherwin-Williams paint store. Police say the driver lost control and fled. No injuries were reported.  Officers arrested the driver following a coordinated response.

KLTV says an elderly  Carthage, Texas woman recently pressed her accelerator instead of her brakes and crashed her SUV into a Dollar General store. Police say no injuries were reported. Viewer-provided photos show shattered glass and bricks

ABC says a Wilmington, Illinois repairman recently got stuck in a gas station sign for hours. The worker was fixing the 130-foot sign off Interstate 55 when his lift failed.  There was no ladder inside the sign. The man was eventually rescued and refused medical treatment

Cleveland.com says an Independence, Ohio man recently rode a scooter on a city street. The man fled from cops and cut across traffic to the I-77 ramp. He had felony warrants for aggravated robbery, aggravated theft and theft with a firearm.  The scooter was registered to a different person. The man was caught and failed field sobriety tests

A Massachusetts man known for wearing a mime costume is facing criminal harassment charges after three female state park workers reported him. Twenty-nine-year-old Hernan Villagran Lux of Framingham was arrested by state police Sunday night at the Cochituate Rail Trail. In court, a prosecutor said the women reported extensive contact with Lux, describing him staring and smiling in what they called an unnerving and terrifying manner. Officials said the behavior grew bolder, including one incident where he stripped to his underwear, covered himself in cooking oil, and worked out near their staff area. He also refused to leave the park when asked. Lux fainted in court and was later ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation.
