Most of us don’t actively monitor our hormone levels, but we probably notice when they’re off. Hormones regulate key bodily functions like growth, metabolism, and reproduction, and when they’re not balanced, it can lead to things we easily brush off, like fatigue, weight gain or mood swings.

But it doesn’t mean we need a prescription to reset those hormone levels. Dr. Gaurav Mandal, a board-certified endocrinologist and internist, shares how to optimize hormones for better sleep, mood and metabolism that are medicine-free. He suggests these simple ways to support hormone balance.

Catch morning rays - Going outside when you wake up is key, as sunlight activates the hormones essential for mood, sleep and reproductive health. If you’re stuck inside, a light therapy lamp or bright indoor lighting can help in the morning.
Hit the gym early in the day - Levels of cortisol, the body’s main stress hormone, naturally peak around 30 to 45 minutes after you wake up and you can take advantage of that by working out in the morning to regulate circadian rhythms for sleep and boost mood with a release of endorphins.

Time your food and caffeine intake - Mandal advises limiting eating to a 10-hour window every day, like from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., which has been shown to improve insulin sensitivity. Time-restricted eating can help restore the balance of gut hormones, which are essential for regulating insulin sensitivity. Poor insulin sensitivity, also known as insulin resistance, can lead to anxiety, brain fog, irritability and fatigue.

Eat three meals a day - Restricting your eating window is helpful, but this expert doesn’t want you skipping meals, which can slow metabolism, increase fat storage, and reduce levels of “feel-good” hormones dopamine and oxytocin.

Hug your partner - Squeezing or cuddling a loved one for as little as 20 seconds releases a surge of oxytocin, which decreases stress to help with mood and sleep.

Power down screens before bed - Mandal points out that turning off screens an hour or so before bedtime helps increase melatonin, which helps you get better sleep. Research shows that getting to bed between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. optimizes the release of melatonin and other hormones, while poor sleep can increase cortisol and ghrelin, aka the “hunger hormone.”⠀

Everyone has said something stupid at some point in their life, even if they don’t want to admit it. While we hope the person we were talking to quickly forgot our foolishness, BuzzFeed readers have us thinking we don’t get off so easily. They’re sharing the dumbest thing they’ve ever heard someone say, and these may make you feel better about your own stupid comment, or leave you horrified for humanity.

These are some of the wildest, almost unbelievable responses:

"A co-worker of mine asked, 'Where do chicken eggs come from?' She was serious!"
"My ex thought that drinking soy milk could change his sexuality."
"Somebody asked if it's safe to sit next to me now that I have cancer, because his wife is pregnant and he doesn't want her to catch it."
"A man I know was put on a low/no-sodium diet by his doctor. When I noticed he was putting salt on his food, he said, 'Oh, this is okay. It's sea salt. It's good for you.'"
"A friend of mine wanted to know why pink lemons were never sold in grocery stores. They concluded that the recipe for pink lemonade was so secretive, our government was using it to take over our minds."
"I had someone tell me to be sure I squished all the air out of a produce bag, or I’d be charged more."
"My friend once asked someone how long they have been Dutch."
"I once had a high school student tell me that I didn't know anything about trees because I had grown up in California, 'where there are no trees.'" "My daughter, age 45 and a college graduate, asked me which side won the Civil War."
"I had a friend who thought that the windmills in Palm Springs were giant fans to help cool down the desert."
"A girl asked my IDENTICAL twin sister and me if we knew we looked alike."

Tim's News You Can't Use

Does it feel like it was just Friday the 13th? That’s because it was — it happened last month, too. In non-leap years, February is exactly four weeks long, so the dates that month fall on the same day of the week in March. But because of leap year, this doesn’t just happen every six or seven years. The last time was in 2015, and it will happen again in 2037.

Those who detest red-light cameras in their towns will be happy to hear the decision handed down by one judge in Florida. In the town of Stuart, Judge Steven P. DeLuca dismissed the photo-enforced traffic citation that was being contested by a defendant. The judge agreed with the defendant, who said Florida’s red-light camera law “unconstitutionally requires the registered owner to prove they were not driving, instead of requiring the government to prove who was behind the wheel.”

A Nigerian woman has broken an 18-year-old Guinness World Record by counting out loud all the way to 1,070,000. Favour Ogechi Ani started on October 8th of last year and finished on December 16th, spending up to 14 hours a day counting for 70 straight days. The old record was a count to 1,000,000, and rather than stop one number past it, she kept going for another 70,000. Source: Oddity Central

A Florida man is facing federal charges after prosecutors say he pulled off a year‑long scheme to steal more than $600,000 worth of onions and potatoes from produce companies.  Federal authorities say 39‑year‑old Jason Canals used fake company identities and falsified documents to order large shipments of onions and potatoes. Once the trucks were on the road, he allegedly rerouted the deliveries and never paid the suppliers. The schemes reportedly ran from August 2024 to August 2025, costing produce companies more than $600,000 in lost goods and transportation.  Canals was arrested and now faces eight federal counts of interstate transport of stolen property -- a charge that could bring up to 10 years in prison if he’s convicted.
