All former Cub Scouts are invited to bring their Pinewood Derby cars to Pack 898’s annual race, slated this year for Jan. 17, 2010 at St. Raphael’s Parish Center in Glasgow.
Racing begins shortly after 5 p.m., and will continue until 7 p.m. Refreshments will be served.
The Pinewood Derby is a staple Cub Scout activity. For over half a century Scouts have been crafting their own race cars out of blocks of pine, adding paint, decals and plastic wheels, and then racing them against each other down a sloped metal track.
Trophies are awarded to winning Scouts, but all participants receive ribbons as well as the experience of building a car from the ground up. This year, the 100th anniversary of Boy Scouts in America, Glasgow’s Pack 898 is inviting all former Cub Scouts to bring their cars to race against current Scouts.
“Scouting is bigger than a single generation, and we wanted to kick off this centennial year by inviting former Scouts and their Pinewood Derby cars,” says Andrew McKean, cubmaster of the local Scout pack. “We’ll have a special race for these vintage cars, and would love to see every generation of derby cars represented, from big-finned coupes from the 1950s to muscle cars of the 1980s.”
Are older cars really better? Find out by coming to St. Raphael’s on Sunday, Jan. 17. Everyone is invited, whether you are a Scout or not.
