What’s the best way to help boost healthy aging? “U.S. News & World Report” asked dozens of health experts including medical professionals, clinical researchers, longevity experts, fitness pros, and dietitians what helps people live better, longer, and they say healthy habits matter more than biohacks.
According to the 2026 U.S. News Healthy Aging Survey, we don’t need expensive supplements or trendy gadgets for longevity. It turns out, what makes more of a difference is exercising regularly and eating a balanced diet.
There’s no magic bullet to slow down the aging process, but research shows that basics beat biohacks.
When the experts were asked to rank the most critical factors for healthy aging, the trifecta they shared is consistent physical activity and exercise (89%), a nutrient-dense, well-balanced diet (89%) and restorative, high-quality sleep (30%).
One thing that speeds up biological aging is chronic, low-grade systemic inflammation (“inflammaging”). Respondents say the single most effective lifestyle intervention to lower it is following an anti-inflammatory diet, like Mediterranean-style diets that are low in refined sugar and high in omega-3s.
While supplements didn’t make the top three habits for healthy aging, certain ones can still help improve overall health by filling basic nutritional gaps. The experts polled recommend multivitamins and vitamin D to support healthy aging.
The survey also reveals that social connection is the biggest healthy aging blind spot. More than half of respondents (59%) rank social isolation as the “most underappreciated potential accelerator of biological aging.” Disrupted sleep-wake cycles is a distant second (19%), followed by chronic, unmanaged micro-stress (18%).
