Like everything else in life, dating is changing and evolving, and new research reveals how today’s singles are doing it. According to a poll of 1,000 U.S. adults in the dating game, many are now more guarded and discerning than they used to be, and that’s affecting the way they meet people and more.⠀
“We are seeing the birth of the ‘Efficiency Audit’ in romance,” explains Patricio Luna, Founder of SegmentOS, the market research firm behind the survey. “Modern daters are no longer just looking for love; they are looking for a return on investment.”
The poll reveals that more than half (53%) are “opting out” of online dating altogether these days, as they feel the risk isn’t worth the potential reward.
Singles now want to avoid emotional and financial pain, even if it means sacrificing chemistry.
They’re also not into the traditional dinner and drinks first dates anymore. Many say those last too long and cost too much, as 40% want shorter and cheaper first dates.
Their ideal first date is meeting for coffee for 45 minutes, which they consider a “wise investment” with low financial stakes and even lower emotional investment.
Before they go out for the first time with someone new, 40% admit they do a little digging on LinkedIn to see what their date does for a living. A lot of singles trust the site more because people aren’t usually trying to impress dates on LinkedIn like they are on dating apps.
While some people trust AI to write their messages or create their dating app profile, it’s a major red flag for others.
Over a third (35%) of respondents consider it a form of “emotional fraud” to use AI to write love letters, but 45% say it would be romantic if their partner used AI to express themselves.
When things fall apart in a romance, 60% prefer activating a “kill switch” to break up rather than dragging it out. They want a clean break with no drama, no confusion, and no fallout, if they can avoid it.
