Amos Peter Erickson

Heaven’s angels are singing more joyfully after Amos Peter Erickson joined the choir on March 1, 2026. Amos was born on a farm near Pelican Rapids, Minnesota on August 10, 1927, the fifth of ten children born to Albert and Clara Erickson.

In high school he was drafted into the U.S. Army Air Corps and served from 1945 to 1948 as a military policeman, including guard at the Nuremberg Trials.

Shortly after military discharge Amos headed to Montana and worked for the railroad and area farmers. Amos met and married Marlene in 1952 and eventually took over the Sonsteng family farm at Larslan, where they raised their three children.

The Montana prairies became his heart and soul; he greeted sunrise with singing and yodeling. His optimism and kindness was uplifting, and a strong work ethic defined his life.

After moving to Glasgow in 2004 Amos worked for Napa, Mattfeldt Electric and Zerbes. He was often seen at basketball games, rodeos, cattle sales, McDonald’s, and lutefisk dinners, when he was not feeding birds, gopher hunting, or taking drives.

In 2021 he moved to Helena, where he lived until his death due to undetected metastasized cancer.

Amos was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Marlene, his parents, siblings and their spouses, Alice, Clarice (Leonard), Myrna (Clifford), Arthur (DeLaine), Albert Clifford, Donald (LaVonne), Randall (Patricia) and Deloris (Fred). His father and mother-in-law, Edwin and Irma Sonsteng, and brother-in-law, Dave Viste.

Amos is survived by his daughters, Marlys (Gary) Martin, Wanda (Dave) Berndtson, and son, Gordon (Laurie), his grandchildren, sisters-in-law, Karyl Viste and Carma (Denny) Johnson, and brother, Earnest (Shirley).

If one listens closely, they may hear yodeling or a “so long, farewell, Auf Wiedersehen, good-bye.”

Public viewing is Sunday, March 8 from 4:00-6:00, at Bell Mortuary with a military burial on Monday. Memorial service will be held in April.  Online condolences may be left for the family at bellmortuarymt.com.
