Celebration of Life for Former Valley County Sheriff set for July 14th

Frank Powell served as Valley County Sheriff from 1966-1972. Powell resigned in 1972 and was replaced by Dan Taylor. 

 

Frank L. Powell age 88 from Greenbay, WI passed on July 14, 2025 at Edenbrook VA home. He was a former resident of Glasgow as well as Hinsdale MT. 

Frank Powell was born April 20, 1937 in Glasgow to Walt and Emma (McGillis) Powell.

He received his early education in Saco as well as in Great Falls, before graduating  from Hinsdale High School.

He is survived by his daughter Helen Kay (Joe) Cooperrider, Granddaughter Beth  (Nathan) Riordan of VA, Brothers Howard Powell, of Havre MT; Bruce (JoAnn) Nelson of Plumis Lake, CA and his sister Shirley (LeeRoy) Bollich of Great Falls, MT as well as step-sons Edward (Kelley) Czigler of CA and Christopher (Rochell) Czigler of MO.  Many grandchildren and one great-grandchild, as well as many nieces and nephews of Powell, McGillis, and Nelson families.

He was proceeded in death by his father Walt Powell, mother Emma Nelson, his step-father Harold Nelson as well as his step-son Robert Czigler.

He joined the Air Force in 1957 was in until 1962 and was stationed in Madison Wisconsin. There he met his future wife. He married Nancy Wollin in 1960.

They had a daughter in 1961.  They then moved back to Montana from Wisconsin in 1963.

Frank worked different jobs in Glasgow before becoming Sheriff in 1966. He was honored to be part of the community in this capacity.

After moving to California, Frank started a new career, he went to school in Texas to study oil field engineering. He went to Singapore for a year to get familiar with working on oil rigs.  When he came back to California, he met and married Pamela Mohr Czigler and raised her sons as his own.

 Frank worked as a Mud Engineer on oil rigs in various countries in Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Gulf of Mexico, North Sea and Africa.  After he retired from the oil field, he started his own medical courier service. The small company serviced various retirement homes as well as pharmacies in northern Wisconsin.

He also traveled to Miles City doing willow work. Showing and teaching people how to use the willow in making furniture as well as decorations.  He loved his many dogs and was very proud of his vegetable garden.

Celebration of life for Frank L. Powell will be held on July 14,2026 at Hillview Cemetery in Hinsdale at 11:00 am.
