Roberta Faye Hopstad
Roberta Faye Hopstad passed away after a short battle with cancer on September 3, 2026, at the age of 63. She was born in Billings, Montana on December 4, 1962, to Tony Degele and Irene Degele. She was raised in Glasgow with her brother, Rock, and sister, Rhonda.
While growing up, many weekends were spent with the family at Duck Creek camping, swimming, and skiing. She had great times with family and the many friends that joined in. When not swimming at the lake, Berta loved playing softball. She played on many all-star teams. It took her a long time to bat as she hit so, so many foul balls; she may be the reason for the foul ball third strike rule!
Roberta graduated from Glasgow High School in 1981. She made friends in high school that would last a lifetime. She spent many years cooking at various restaurants in town. Some of her favorite memories include being at the Highlander Cafe with her Aunt Sandra and working with the girls at Carlos Cantina for her Uncle Carlyle, as well as the many years spent at Johnnie’s Cafe working for the Nass family. One of her proudest accomplishments was becoming sober from alcohol, and maintaining that sobriety for over 30 years, allowing her to enjoy her life and her kids to the fullest.
In August of 1990 she married the love of her life Charles Hopstad. They were blessed with three children: Sheena, Shawn and Chaz. She lovingly welcomed her stepchildren Travis and Donde into their family.
Her hobbies included bowling, she bowled many years with her mom and sister, traveling to many state tournaments. Berta taught her kids to bowl, instilling the love of the sport in them. Berta and Rhonda also spent several years running the youth bowling league. She loved baking and baked many cakes for special occasions. It gave her so much joy to cook and feed her family very delicious meals. She loved family functions so she could visit, play pinochle, visit, play games, and visit some more! Berta loved her entire family more than anything and was a genealogy master. Any family tree questions could be directed to her, and she would be able to answer instantly. Berta also loved music, especially when her extended family sang so beautifully, although she, herself, couldn’t carry a tune!
Berta and Rhonda took their kids on many, many summer trips to water parks, family reunions and many sports adventures. Everyone has wonderful memories of the great times spent together. But the kids talk about how directionally challenged the both of them are and wonder how they actually arrived at any destination using just paper maps!
Berta was a loving wife, mother, sister, aunt and friend. Roberta loved watching her boys play baseball and wrestle. Her greatest love was for her grandchildren, whether it was sporting events, music recitals, school programs, road trips, or teaching them how to cook in the kitchen. She made sure she was at as many events as possible, including those of her nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews.
Roberta worked at Farm Service Agency for 28 years until her diagnosis. She deeply cherished her daily interactions with her work family and the community’s farmers and ranchers.
Roberta is survived by her mother Irene Degele, her three children: Sheena Hopstad, Shawn Hopstad, Chaz (Taylor) Hopstad, her two stepchildren Travis (Teddi) Hopstad and Donde Fraser (Cory Hallock). Her grandchildren: Bella, Ava, Charlee, and Dylan Lund, Silas Hopstad, Cruz, Cali, and Dean Hopstad, Alesia and Reannah Hopstad, Ecko and Ashur Fraser. Her siblings Rhonda (Dan) Bilbruck. Rock (Jeanne) Degele. Along with many special aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Roberta was preceded in death by her father Tony Degele; her husband Charles Hopstad; and her granddaughter Madison Faith Chatten.
Services will be held at the First Lutheran Church, 1:00 p.m., Saturday, September 12, 2026. Reception following at the Elks. Online condolences may be left for Roberta’s family at bellmortuarymt.com.
