A supermajority of the Montana Senate on Thursday issued a letter urging state Sen. Jonathan Windy Boy, a Box Elder Democrat, to resign his seat following allegations of sexual misconduct.
The letter sustains an ongoing effort by Windy Boy's peers to push him out of office after allegations emerged in April that he exposed himself to two minors girls in an online chat room 25 years ago. Already, legislative leaders have removed him from interim committees. In the weeks since, a former legislator and legislative staffer have both publicly alleged Windy Boy of sexual harassment at the Capitol.
Lawmakers cannot expel him from office outside of the biennial legislative session, but the implication of a supermajority signing Thursday's letter is that they would have the votes to do so on Day One of the 2027 session, which begins in January. More explicitly, the letter also noted the four members of the ethics committee did not sign the letter, recusing themselves for potentially having to handle future proceedings on this matter.
Windy Boy has not spoken with the press about the allegations and did not return a phone call placed Thursday seeking comment on the letter.
In May, he released several statements claiming he was being politically persecuted by his opponents in the eastern congressional primary race and by the state party.
Windy Boy remains on the ballot for Montana's eastern congressional district Democratic primary. The election is June 2.
