Cannabis Sales Increase in Valley County

Sales of Cannabis in Montana increased to $27,384,763 in the month of March compared to February according to the Montana Department of Revenue.

In Valley County, sales totaled $153,103 in the month of March compared to $136,583 in February.

Valley County imposes a 3% tax on the sale of both adult-use and medical marijuana. Here is how the local tax revenue is distributed:

Local-option marijuana excise taxes are distributed to counties 60 days after the return due date. Counties are then responsible for distributions made to municipalities in that county:

  • 50% retained by the county
  • 45% apportioned to municipalities on the basis of the ratio of the population of the city or town to the total county population
  • 5% retained by Department of Revenue for administration

Local-option tax distributions are calculated using actual tax collected during the collection period. Any tax collected or adjusted, regardless of the tax period it applies to, during the collection period will be included in that distribution.

According to Montana law, here is how the Montana Marijuana Tax is distributed:

The 20% Adult-Use Cannabis Tax and 4% Medical Marijuana tax are distributed at the state level:

  • 11% must be transferred to the healing and ending addiction through recovery and treatment (HEART) account established in 16-12-122
  • After the HEART distribution, the remainder goes to:
    • 20% to the habitat legacy account provided for in 87-5-811
    • 4% to the state park account established in 23-1-105(1)
    • 4% to the trails and recreational facilities account established in 23-2-108
    • 4% to the nongame wildlife account established in 87-5-121
    • 3% or $200,000, whichever is less, to the veterans and surviving spouses state special revenue account provided for in 10-2-108
    • $150,000 to the board of crime control to fund crisis intervention team training as provided in 44-7-110
    • The remainder to the general fund
