GREAT FALLS-MONTANA

Montana holds on to beat Great Falls 60-59

MISSOULA, Mont. (AP) — Will Cherry hit two free throws with 13 seconds left, and Montana escaped with a 60-59 victory Monday over Great Falls in the Grizzlies' home opener.

Kareem Jamar scored 14 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for Montana (1-1), and Cherry added 11 points. His free throws gave Montana a 60-56 lead before the Argonauts' Marcel Towns drained a 3-pointer with 3 seconds left. Great Falls (4-1) fouled and Shawn Stockton missed two free throws, but James Holmes' desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer was off the mark.

Great Falls had rallied from an 11-point halftime deficit, taking a 50-47 lead on a Ken Anderson jumper with 6:49 to play. Anderson led all scorers with 18 points, Towns scored 17 and added eight steals, and Melvin Williams had 12 points.

The Argonauts shot 54 percent from the field in the second half, fueling the 26-7 run that briefly gave them the lead.

MONTANANS IN THE NFL

Mariani returns punt 79 yards for Titans TD

UNDATED (AP) — Former University of Montana football player Marc Mariani returned a punt 79 yards for a touchdown early in the first quarter to spark the Tennessee Titans to a 30-3 win over Carolina.

Sunday's touchdown return was the first this season for Mariani. The Havre, Mont., native played in the Pro Bowl last year after returning both a punt and a kickoff for scores as a rookie.

Another former Griz, Dan Carpenter, kicked two field goals and two extra points in the Miami Dolphins 20-9 win over the Washington Redskins. It was Miami's second consecutive win and its first home win in nearly a year.

Former Griz Kroy Biermann of Hardin assisted on a tackle for the Atlanta Falcons in a 26-23 overtime loss to the New Orleans Saints.

Columbus native Dwan Edwards had one tackle for the Buffalo Bills in their 44-7 loss at Dallas.

FRONTIER PLAYERS

Athletes from Carroll, E. Ore., Mont. Tech honored

WHITEFISH, Mont. (AP) — Athletes from Carroll College, Eastern Oregon and Montana Tech have been named Frontier Conference football players of the week.

Running back Pat Hansen received offensive honors for accumulating 341 yards of total offense in Montana Tech's 34-15 win over Montana Western. He rushed for 260 yards and two touchdowns on 40 carries, had a 60-yard touchdown reception and returned a kick for 21 yards.

Eastern Oregon's Marc-Avery Airhart was named defensive player of the week for both the conference and the NAIA. The linebacker had five solo tackles, two assisted tackles, two tackles for a loss and recovered a fumble he returned 50 yards for a touchdown in Eastern's 27-16 win over Rocky Mountain College.

Special teams honors went to linebacker Sean Blomquist, who blocked a punt that led to a Carroll touchdown.

Carroll defeated Montana State-Northern 42-24.

FOOTBALL POLLS

Bobcats go into Cat-Griz ranked No. 1

HELENA, Mont. (AP) — Montana State goes into the annual Cat-Griz football rivalry as the top-ranked team in the Football Championship Subdivision.

The Bobcats are ranked first in both The Sports Network and the FCS coaches polls released Monday after previous No. 1 North Dakota State lost over the weekend.

Montana is ranked seventh in both polls.

The Cat-Griz game kicks off at 12:07 p.m. Saturday at Bobcat Stadium in Bozeman.

School officials say the Bobcats haven't been ranked first during the regular season since 1978.

They were ranked as high as second in 1984 when they went on to win the NCAA Division I-AA national championship.

NAIA-CARROLL

Carroll College football draws Valley City State

HELENA, Mont. (AP) — The Carroll College football team begins defense of its NAIA national title with a first-round playoff game against Valley City State of North Dakota.

The game kicks off at noon Saturday at Carroll's Nelson Stadium.

Second-ranked Carroll is making its 12th consecutive appearance in the NAIA playoffs, a string that started with a 24-21 win over Valley City in November 2000. The 12th-ranked Vikings are making their first appearance since 2001, when they lost to the Saints 45-27 in the first round.

The teams' only common opponent is Dickinson State. Carroll won 35-5 at Dickinson, N.D. while Valley City State beat the Blue Hawks 28-26 at Dickinson and 23-13 at home.

Carroll coach Mike Van Diest says the coaching staff is going to have to make some tough decisions as it cuts its roster from the 68 or 69 that have played this season to the 57 allowed in the playoffs.
