Glasgow Shows Up and Shows Out at State AAU

The Glasgow Wrestling Club put in the work this weekend at the State AAU Tournament in the Billings Metra. This year’s tournament broke a participation record for a 5th consecutive year as 1,818 wrestlers came together for a chance at State Championship glory. Glasgow was the 2nd largest team in attendance; bringing a club record 76 wrestlers to the State Meet. Only Team Champs (Billings West) brought a larger team to AAU’s year-end event.

TEN Individual Champions, eight girls and two boys, would highlight the weekend as TenLea and Taryn Sundeen, Hannah and Aubree Holinde, Harlee Vandermars, Kennedy Flaten, Indie Marks, and Riley Pedersen all took GOLD for the Highlander Girls. While Taden Sundeen and Newt Knaff both snatched Invididual State Championships honors for the Highlander Boys! The 10 Individual AAU State Champions tied last year's performance for the 2nd most in a single season throughout the storied history of the Glasgow Wrestling Club. A history that dates back over 58 years.

Individual honors would not stop there as the Highlander Girls put 23 on the State podium and the Boys added another 17. The 40 State Placers is tied for our 2nd most in a single season in Glasgow Wrestling Club history! The 23 Girls landing in the top 6 broke a program record that was set last year with 22. Seven Highlanders would also grab Silver by finishing as State-Runner up in their respective weight classes.

Impressive individual performances continue to lead to more team success. Since 2021, the Glasgow Wrestling Club has established themselves as the premier Girls program in the State of Montana. This year was no different as the ladies of GWC again dominated the All-Class event with a total of 310 team points! The 310 points topped a field that featured 72 Girls club teams! This placed the girls 18 points in front of Billings Darkhorse (feeder program for the 4x Class AA Champ Billings Senior) who finished with 292. The Girls Team would ultimately finish 2nd in the AAU Large Team Standings at the event and second overall for the Walt Egged Award. By Montana AAU By-Laws; large team standings only account for a teams top 15 individual scorers while the Walt Egged Award is reserved for a Club's top 10 scorers. In both categories, the Lady Highlanders fell just short of Billings Darkhorse. Large Team Top two: Darkhorse 263, Glasgow 255. Walt Egged top two: Darkhorse 213, Glasgow 211. This marks the 6th consecutive year that the Lady Highlanders have finished in the Top 3 overall at the AAU State Championships.

The Highlander Boys also showed up and put it all on the line this weekend in Billings. The Boys finished in 8th Place overall out of 90 club teams at the event. The GWC boys piled up 369 points with the aid of nine Top Three place finishers. The boys maintained a 55% winning percentage over the three day event; finishing with a 106-88 overall record. The boys finished in 3rd place among all Class B/C feeder programs in attendance, finishing short of Yellowstone County Clubs: Huntley Project and Shepherd. It is a 10th consecutive year that the Highlander Boys have finished in the Top 10 overall at the AAU State Championships. Great job kids and coaches!

Next weekend, GWC will do it all over again at the Montana Open! Same location; the Billings Metra. “The Open” is expected to be at least 700 more kids than State AAU and has developed into the premier event in the region. The Montana Open is capped at 2,500 participants.
