Scobey Woman Charged With Criminal Endangerment
A Scobey woman is facing five charges in Daniels County District Court, including felony criminal endangerment.
According to the Northern Plains Independent, Carleen Machart is accused of repeatedly intercepting mail belonging to her former husband and replacing medication in his packages with prescription blood-pressure medication and the anticoagulant Warfarin.
Court documents allege the victim became dizzy and experienced visual problems after taking several of the substituted pills. Warfarin can cause severe or life-threatening bleeding when taken without proper medical supervision.
Authorities say surveillance video later showed Machart removing a package from the victim’s post office box. A subsequent search of her residence allegedly uncovered the package, mail and financial statements belonging to the victim, prescription pills and a key matching his post office box.
Investigators say Machart admitted intercepting the mail and switching the medication, allegedly telling them she thought it “would be funny.”
Machart is also charged with misdemeanor theft, criminal mischief, stalking and theft by embezzlement. If convicted of criminal endangerment, she could face up to 10 years in prison, a fine of up to $50,000, or both.
District Judge Benjamin Fosland has recused himself from the case.
