WalletHub has just come out with their ranking of the Safest States in America in 2026.

It compares each state on 52 key safety factors in five categories - personal & residential safety, financial safety, road safety, workplace safety, and emergency preparedness. These include assaults per capita, bullying incidents rate, identity-theft complaints per capita, road quality, active firefighters per capita, and the number of climate disasters.

Based on all of that, Vermont tops the list as the safest state in the country. It gets high scores for its safe neighborhoods and safe roads, with the second-best road quality in the country. Vermont also has one of the lowest unemployment rates nationwide at 2.7%.

Connecticut comes in first for personal and residential safety, New Hampshire is first for financial safety, Utah is number one for road safety, Virginia tops the list for workplace safety, and Alaska is the best state for emergency preparedness.

Landing at the bottom of the list overall is Mississippi, making it the least safe state. Louisiana, Texas, Florida, and Arkansas round out the bottom five.

One-Hit Wonder - GREEN TAMBOURINE    THE LEMON PIPERS   #1 in 1968

Psychedelic/bubblegum rock band from Oxford, Ohio: Ivan Browne (vocals, guitar), Bill Bartlett (guitar; Ram Jam ), R.G. Nave (organ), Steve Walmsley (bass) and Bill Albaugh (drums).

  • This very psychedelic song tells the story of a busker who plays for change. Throw some coins in his green tambourine and he'll play you a song.

Lyricist Shelley Pinz wrote the words after reading a newspaper article about an elder UK street musician who used a tambourine to collect money as he performed in front of a bank.
  • The music to this song was written by Paul Leka, whose other claim to fame is the song "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye," which he wrote and recorded with two other guys and was credited to "Steam," which was a group they made up to release the song.
