Motorists are being reminded that Montana law requires drivers to yield to pedestrians who are crossing within a marked or unmarked crosswalk at an intersection.
As warmer weather brings more people outdoors, local officials encourage drivers to remain alert, especially in school zones, residential neighborhoods, parks, and downtown areas. Pedestrians have the right-of-way when lawfully crossing in a crosswalk, and drivers must slow down or stop to allow them to cross safely.
Officials also remind motorists that if a vehicle is stopped at a crosswalk for a pedestrian, other drivers may not pass that stopped vehicle. Drivers making turns at intersections must also yield to pedestrians crossing with the signal or within the crosswalk.
Pedestrians are encouraged to do their part by remaining visible, using designated crosswalks whenever possible, and avoiding stepping into traffic when vehicles do not have adequate time to stop.
With children out of school for the summer and increased foot traffic throughout the community, everyone is encouraged to use extra caution. A few seconds of patience behind the wheel can help prevent a serious accident and keep Glasgow’s streets safe for everyone.
“Whether you’re walking, biking, or driving, we all share responsibility for safety,” officials said. “Please slow down, stay alert, and watch for pedestrians.”
