Ten more days to enroll for 2026 homestead and long-term rental reduced rates

Deadline 3/20 - Ten more days to enroll for 2026 homestead and long-term rental reduced rates

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 10, 2026

HELENA – Qualified Montana taxpayers have ten more days to enroll their properties to receive reduced tax rates for their primary residences (homesteads) or long-term rental property.

Governor Gianforte announced earlier this month that the department had determined extenuating circumstances to exist, allowing DOR to waive the application deadline until March 20.

The fastest way for taxpayers to enroll their property is online at homestead.mt.gov. Mailing a paper application form will add processing time.

The online enrollment portal will close at midnight on March 20, 2026. Paper applications for the 2026 tax year postmarked or received after March 20 are ineligible to be processed. Taxpayers are urged to apply online at homestead.mt.gov.

Rental property that is part of a primary residence, for example an accessory dwelling unit (ADU) or outbuilding, must be separately enrolled to qualify for reduced tax rates.

For more information or to enroll your property, please visit homestead.mt.gov.
