Great Falls guard Kezia Ford won the women's award. The senior from Augusta averaged 18.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, three assists and two steals as the Lady Argos beat Montana Western 87-81 and fell to Montana Tech 76-67. Ford had 27 points in the win over Western.

BIG SKY-ROOT SPORTS

Big Sky games to be televised by Root Sports

HELENA, Mont. (AP) — The Big Sky Conference has announced a five-year television deal that it says could make conference football and basketball games available to viewers across 18 states and bring more money to the league's 13 schools.

League Commissioner Doug Fullerton said Tuesday that ROOT SPORTS will televise up to 18 conference football games each season, beginning next season, including the annual Montana-Montana State rivalry game. It also may broadcast up to 12 regular-season conference basketball games along with the quarterfinal and semifinal men's basketball tournament games.

The games will be produced in high definition. ROOT SPORTS reaches a combined 6.3 million viewers in its Northwest and Rocky Mountain regions, on channels previously owned by Fox Sports Network.

Fullerton says ROOT SPORTS will have to choose the football games it plans to broadcast by mid-March, giving the conference time to work with other broadcasters who might be interested in televising the remaining games.

The financial details were not disclosed.

BIG SKY-BAKER

Montana's Katie Baker honored by Big Sky

HELENA, Mont. (AP) — Montana junior Katie Baker is the Big Sky Conference women's basketball player of the week.

The forward from Coeur d'Alene, Idaho scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in each of Montana's two wins last week, giving her four double-doubles in the team's past six games.

Baker shot 47.6 percent from the field, made 15 of 17 free throws and added five assists, two blocked shots and two steals in the two games — a 60-48 win over Northern Arizona and a 77-70 win over Weber State.

Baker leads the Lady Griz with 13.4 points and 7.2 rebounds per game and is the team's top shooter, hitting 44 percent of her shots.

MONTANA ST-WEBER ST

Weber State rolls past Montana State 63-49

OGDEN, Utah (AP) — Scott Bamforth scored 20 points to maintain his hot start in Big Sky Conference play and Weber State won its seventh straight game with a 63-49 victory over Montana State Thursday.

Damian Lillard added 17 points and Byron Fulton contributed 11 points and 13 rebounds off the bench as Weber State (13-3, 5-0 Big Sky) remained perfect in conference play and set up a battle of Big Sky unbeatens at home against Montana on Saturday.

Lillard, who entered the game as the nation's leading scorer (26.3 ppg), moved into Weber State's top five career scoring list, passing Jimmie Watts.

Jeff Budinich and Michael Dison led Montana State (7-8, 2-2) with 12 and 11 points, respectively, as the Bobcats' two-game winning streak ended.

Wildcats senior Kyle Bullinger, an all-Big Sky Conference first-teamer, saw his first action since injuring his elbow Dec. 3.

Bullinger played 10 minutes and did not score.

MONTANA-N ARIZONA

Montana routs Northern Arizona 78-53

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) — Kareem Jamar had 15 points and seven rebounds as Montana cruised to its sixth straight win, beating Northern Arizona 78-53 Thursday night.

Will Cherry scored 12 points and Mathias Ward added 10 for the Grizzlies (11-5, 4-0 Big Sky), who will visit Weber State in a battle of conference unbeatens Saturday.

Gabe Rogers and James Douglas scored 13 and 12 points, respectively, for Northern Arizona (5-12, 1-4), which has lost four straight.

Sharp ball movement and solid defense afforded Montana countless easy looks throughout the game. The Grizzlies scored 28 points off turnovers and held a 40-18 point advantage in the paint despite receiving just six points from 7-foot forward Derek Selvig.

Eight teams have shot 50 percent or better against the Lumberjacks this season.

The 25-point loss was their worst loss at home against Montana since losing 77-46 in Flagstaff during the 1995-96 season.

HELENA, Mont. (AP) — Carroll College women's basketball coach Rachelle Sayers says the team lost its leading scorer to a season-ending injury.

The Independent Record (http://bit.ly/xPGUdv ) reports senior guard Alysha Green of Spokane, Wash., suffered a knee injury last Friday at Rocky Mountain College. An MRI revealed a torn ligament and meniscus that will require surgery.

Green had been averaging 14.5 points and four assists per game.

Last season, Green was an NAIA honorable mention All-American.

She has scored more than 1,200 points in her career.

Montana State guard no longer with team

(Information in the following story is from: Bozeman Daily Chronicle, http://www.bozemandailychronicle.com)

BOZEMAN, Mont. (AP) — Montana State men's basketball coach Brad Huse says junior guard Jamie Stewart of Detroit is no longer a member of the team.

The Bozeman Daily Chronicle (http://bit.ly/z6EryX ) reports Huse announced the change Tuesday, but did not elaborate.

Stewart played in 12 games this season with seven starts. He averaged 9.1 points, 3.1 rebounds, 2.1 assists and a steal. He has not played in a game or practiced since Dec. 28.

Stewart told the Chronicle he is facing the consequences of some poor decisions and hopes to re-join the team for spring practice.

EAGLES-ANDERSON

Eagles name Colt Anderson special teams MVP

MISSOULA, Mont. (AP) — Colt Anderson of Butte was named the special teams player of the year for the Philadelphia Eagles despite missing the final four games with a knee injury.

Anderson told University of Montana sports information Tuesday it was an honor to receive the award, especially because it's voted on by the coaches and players.

Anderson was placed on injured reserve on Dec. 5, four days after tearing a ligament in his knee during a game in Seattle. He underwent surgery and is rehabbing.

The former University of Montana MVP was named the special teams captain for the Eagles playoff game against eventual Super Bowl champion Green Bay last year.

The Philadelphia Eagles website says the team was ranked fourth in the NFL in kickoff coverage after 12 games, but finished the season ranked 14th.

Western center Hayley Pettit of Dillon won the women's award after averaging 18 points, 16 rebounds and 2.5 steals per game as the Bulldogs split their weekend games.

MONTANA SCHEDULE

Montana football sked includes new Big Sky members

MISSOULA, Mont. (AP) — The University of Montana has announced its 2012 football schedule, including a season-opener against former coach Joe Glenn's South Dakota team and matchups against two new Big Sky Conference opponents.

The Griz also take on top FCS teams Appalachian State and Liberty University in nonconference games.

Montana has home league games against Northern Arizona, Southern Utah, Idaho State along with Montana State on Nov. 17. The Griz have road games at Eastern Washington, Northern Colorado, North Dakota and Weber State.

Montana athletics director Jim O'Day says Griz fans should be excited that the schedule includes 11 NCAA Division I games, including six at Washington-Grizzly Stadium.

FLORIDA-PEASE

AP source: Florida hires Boise State's Pease as OC

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — A person familiar with the search says Florida has hired Boise State's Brent Pease as its offensive coordinator.

The person spoke to The Associated Press Tuesday on condition of anonymity because an official announcement is scheduled for Wednesday.

The person says Pease has agreed to a three-year deal worth a little more than $500,000, on par with what other play-callers are making in the Southeastern Conference. Pease replaces Charlie Weis, who left last month to take the head job at Kansas.

The Gators met with the 47-year-old Pease last Friday, and the interview seemingly went so well that Pease cancelled an interview with national champion Alabama.

The Crimson Tide is looking for a coordinator to replace Jim McElwain, who left to take the head job at Colorado State.

BOISE ST-MILLER

Boise State's Miller named freshman All-America

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Boise State wide receiver Matt Miller was named a member of the first-team Freshman All-America team by the Football Writers Association of America.

The redshirt freshman from Helena, Mont., tied for the team lead with 62 catches. He was second with 679 receiving yards and nine receiving touchdowns. All three numbers were school freshman records.

Miller caught Kellen Moore's 100th career touchdown pass against Georgia, had two TD catches against UNLV and made another touchdown catch while lying on his back in the end zone against Wyoming.

He previously was named a second-team Freshman All-American by Yahoo! Sports.

Boise State's previous freshman records were 46 catches and six touchdowns by Austin Pettis and 639 yards by Titus Young — all in the 2007 season.

Osweiler leaving ASU for NFL

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Arizona State quarterback Brock Osweiler has declared for the NFL draft and will forgo his senior season.

Osweiler made the announcement on Friday after discussing his options with family and incoming Sun Devils coach Todd Graham.

A backup most of the 2010 season, Osweiler became the first Arizona State quarterback to throw for over 4,000 yards as a junior, finishing the season with 4,036 yards while setting school records for completions, attempts and completion percentage. He also threw for 26 touchdowns, fourth-most in school history.

A native of Kalispell, Mont., the 6-foot-8 Osweiler was a basketball recruit for Gonzaga before signing with Arizona State to play football. He has been projected as a mid-round NFL draft pick.

MONTANA ST-IDAHO ST

Montana State holds on to beat Idaho State 73-69

POCATELLO, Idaho (AP) — Shawn Reid scored 15 of his 23 points in the first half, and Montana State held off an Idaho State comeback for a 73-69 win on Thursday night.

Reid was 6 of 7 from the field before halftime, including 3 of 4 from beyond the arc, for the Bobcats (7-7, 2-1 Big Sky), who built a 30-13 lead in the first 14 minutes. Christian Moon added 18 points for the game, and Rod Singleton scored 14. MSU shot 53 percent (24 for 45) from the field.

Kenny McGowen scored 18 points and Melvin Morgan had 17 for the Bengals (3-11, 1-2), who cut MSU's lead to 37-29 at halftime and pulled within four points early in the second half.

Later, the Bobcats went on a 10-0 run to go back up by 15.

The Bengals clawed back to within three with 18 seconds left, but couldn't complete the comeback.

CARROLL-PLAYERS INELIGIBLE

4 Carroll men's basketball players ineligible

HELENA, Mont. (AP) — Carroll College men's basketball coach Brandon Veltri says four players have been declared academically ineligible based on the school's standards.

Veltri says the Saints lost leading rebounder Byago Diouf (be-YAH'-goh dee-OOF') of Dakar, Senegal; guard Nick Jones of Melbourne, Australia; guard Tyson Percifield of Meridian, Idaho and Southern Utah transfer Jordan Weirick of West Jordan, Utah.

The NAIA bases eligibility on team grade point average at the beginning of the year, Carroll requires its athletes to have a 2.0 GPA every term. Veltri tells the Independent Record (http://bit.ly/wpF3k3) that Diouf, Jones and Percifield all failed to meet those standards. He said the team parted ways with Weirick for a variety of reasons, including academics.

Diouf led the team in rebounding while Weirick was tops in assists and steals. Jones was hitting 50 percent of his shots and averaging nine points per game.

Carroll plays at Rocky Mountain College on Friday.
