Glasgow February Weather Summary
Tuesday, March 6th 2007
From the Glasgow National Weather Service Office
This past February was colder and wetter than normal. The average high of 14.9 degrees was 4.4 degrees below normal. The average high was 23.9 degrees, while the average low was 5.9 degrees. The warmest was 50 degrees on the 20th...while the coldest was 20 below zero on the 14th.

February had alternating cold and mild spells, the colder spells the longer and more numerous, though. This resulted in the first colder than normal month since October, and only the 2nd month since last March that has been colder than normal.

The main cold spell occurred at mid-month, when high temperatures failed to climb above zero on both the 13th and 14th. A spell of warmer weather quickly followed, with above freezing highs on 10 straight days.

Snowfall of 10.1 inches was well above the normal 4.4 inches. It was the 6th snowiest February on record, and the snowiest February since 1979. There were 7 straight days in a row with measurable snow between the 8th and the 14th...just short of the February record of 9 in a row set in February 1962. Snow cover was often an inch or less or with numerous bare spots for most of the month, except at mid-month when snow depths climbed to 5 inches.

Winds gusted to over 30 mph on 7 days...but on 6 days the highest daily gust was under 20 mph. The average wind speed for the day was above 10 mph on 13 days, while 15 days averaged less than 10 mph. Dense fog or visibility reduced to one quarter of a mile or less occurred twice: on the 25th and the 28th.

Hot, Dry Year For U.S. And Glasgow
Thursday, January 11th 2007
The National Weather Service has released the 2006 climate summary. Among the highlits from 2006:

It was the warmest year ever for the U.S. in 112 years of record keeping.

2006 was the second warmest on record in Montana.

The summer months of June, July, and August were the 14th driest in Montana history

It was the third warmest year on record for Glasgow

It was the driest summer on record for Glasgow

While portions of Montana were listed as abnormally dry or moderate drought in early 2006, the severe and extreme drought began by mid July. The southeast portion of the state has been in the worst conditions since that time frame. By August, all of eastern Montana was in a severe or extreme drought. A storm in mid-October provided some relief to the northern portions of the state, but the southeast remained in the severe to extreme category through the end of the year.

Fall Weather Summary
Tuesday, December 12th 2006
(From the Glasgow National Weather Service Office)
September generally featured near normal temperatures and well above normal precipitation. The first half of the month was a continuation of the hot, and in some cases record dry summer. Around the middle of the month the weather abruptly changed, and turned much wetter and colder. Two strong storm systems affected the area. The first, on the 15th through the 17th, and the second on the 21st through the 22nd. The first storm system was accompanied by unusually cold air for so early in the season, and many locations observed their first snowflakes of the season. Several locations north of the Missouri River and across the higher terrain south of the Missouri had accumulating snow. Opheim 12SE measured 3 inches of snow, and even Carlyle 13NW in southern Wibaux County had an inch of snow.

Temperatures were frequently in the 80s the first two weeks of the month, and several locations even had a few days in the 90s. The warmest temperature observed all month was 99 degrees on the 13th at Bredette. Opheim 10N, Opheim 12SE, and Scobey 4NW all had their first freeze of the season during the first few days of the month. Most of the remainder of northeast Montana had to wait until the storm system around the middle of the month for their first freeze of the season. The coldest temperature observed all month was 24 degrees, which was observed on the morning of the 19th at both Opheim 10N and Scobey 4NW.

All of northeast Montana had above normal precipitation in September, due to the two storms around the middle of the month. Each of these storms produced a widespread area of a half an inch to over an inch of rain. By the end of the month, most areas observed between 2 and 3 inches of rain. Carlyle 13NW and Brockton 20S observed the most precipitation, with 4.06 and 4.05 inches respectively. There were a few spots, mainly north of the Missouri that observed less than 2 inches of rain, but even there, totals were a bit above average for September.

October was much colder and wetter than normal. In some areas it was the first month in over a year to feature well below normal temperatures. The month started quite mild with highs in the 70s and even lower 80s the first week of the month. It then turned much colder with temperatures below, and at times even well below normal for much of the remainder of the month. The most significant weather event was an early season winter storm which affected all of northeast Montana from the evening of the 29th through the morning of the 30th. Most of the area received from 2 to 4 inches of snow. The snow was accompanied by strong wind, which produced areas of blowing and drifting snow.

October also featured a cold snap from the 11th through 13th, which sent low temperatures down into the teens, and produced record lows and a very hard freeze. Temperatures did not get as cold again until the first arctic front of the season sent temperatures down into the single digits and in some cases below zero on the morning of the 31st. Jordan 43ENE took the honors with the lowest observed temperature of 2 below on the morning of the 31st, although several locations observed lows near zero. Glendive and Malta both tied for the warmest temperature in October, with both spots recording a high of 84 degrees on the 1st.

Just about all of northeast Montana had well above normal precipitation. Most observation sites reported between three quarters of an inch and 2 inches of liquid precipitation. Brusett observed the most precipitation with 3.12 inches. Most areas were well above average in the snowfall department, thanks in large part to the snow event late in the month. Carlyle 13NW had the most snowfall during the month, with 10.5 inches. Wibaux 2E was a close second, with 10 inches of snow.

November had both temperatures and precipitation that were close to normal. The month began and ended with well below normal temperatures, but in between there was nearly 3 weeks of mild and relatively dry weather. The cold weather the first few days of the month sent temperatures below zero in spots, with Scobey 4NW reporting a low of 6 below on the morning of the 2nd. Temperatures quickly warmed up on the 4th, with 50s and 60s quite common until late in the month. An arctic airmass dropped into northeast Montana on the 24th, with temperatures dropping well below zero late in the month.

The return to colder weather and the snowfall that accompanied the arctic blast was the weather highlight of the month. Snow on the 24th produced from 2 to 5 inches of snow across portions of Phillips, Valley and Daniels Counties. A more widespread snowfall occurred across all of Northeast Montana from early on the morning of the 28th through the morning of the 29th. Snowfall amounts averaged out to between 2 and 5 inches north of the Missouri, with 1-3 inches south of the Missouri. The snow was accompanied by cold temperatures and strong wind. The strong wind produced considerable drifting snow, and the combination of sub-zero temperatures and the wind produced wind chills of 25 to 40 below zero.

Glendive and Savage had the honors for the warmest temperature observed during the month with a high temperature of 75 degrees on the 7th. Scobey 4NW was yet again the cold spot with a low of 25 below zero on the 26th. Malta and Opheim were not far behind that morning with lows of 23 below zero.

Most areas received between a quarter and half inch of liquid precipitation. Whitewater was the wet spot, with three quarters of an inch. Snowfall was highly variable, but in many areas was either near or above normal. The greatest snowfall totals were observed in Phillips and Valley Counties. Hinsdale 4SW measured 11 inched, with 10 inches observed at Opheim 12SE.

RECORD DRY SUMMER. THE JUNE 1ST THRU SEPTEMBER 14TH RAINFALL WAS
1.74 INCHES...THE DRIEST EVER ON RECORD FOR THAT PERIOD OF TIME. THE
OLD JUNE 1ST THRU SEPTEMBER 14TH RECORD WAS 2.24 INCHES IN 1979.

THEN AT MID-MONTH...TWO UNUSUALLY HEAVY RAINFALLS OCCURRED BACK TO
BACK ON THE 15TH THROUGH THE 17TH...AND AGAIN ON THE
21ST-22ND...SUDDENLY ENDING THE LONG DRY SPELL. BOTH STORM TOTALS
WERE OVER AN INCH. THE 2.40 INCHES OF RAIN FOR THE MONTH MADE
SEPTEMBER 2006 THE WETTEST IN 10 YEARS...AND RANKS 9TH WETTEST
SEPTEMBER EVER. DAILY RAINFALLS GREATER THAN THE RECORD DAILY
RAINFALL OF 0.96 INCHES ON THE 22ND HAVE HAPPENED IN SEPTEMBER ONLY
15 OTHER TIMES SINCE 1893.

THE VERY WET WEATHER AT MID-MONTH WAS ALSO ACCOMPANIED BY A VERY
SUDDEN CHANGE TO UNUSUALLY COLD WEATHER. THE LAST 10 DAYS OF THE
MONTH HAD CLOSE TO NORMAL TEMPERATURES THOUGH. THE HIGH OF 39 ON THE
17TH BROKE THE RECORD COLD HIGH OF 45 ON THAT DATE IN 1942. ONLY
TWICE EVER IN GLASGOW HAS SUCH A COLD HIGH TEMPERATURE BEEN OBSERVED
ANY EARLIER IN THE SEASON...MOST RECENTLY IN 1921. AND ON THE
16TH...THE RECORD COLD HIGH OF 46 SET IN 1915 WAS TIED. THE FIRST
FREEZE OCCURRED ON THE 19TH...WHICH IS CLOSE TO NORMAL.

ON THE 17TH...THE FIRST SNOWFLAKES OF THE SEASON WERE OBSERVED. ONLY
9 TIMES SINCE 1893 HAS SNOWFALL BEEN OBSERVED ANY EARLIER IN THE
SEASON...MOST RECENTLY IN 1997.

NOT ONLY WAS THE 17TH AN UNUSUALLY COLD...RAINY...AND SNOW DAY...BUT
ALSO UNUSUALLY WINDY. THE AVERAGE SPEED FOR THE DAY OF 26.5 MPH WAS
TIED FOR THE SECOND WINDIEST SEPTEMBER DAY EVER. THE RECORD IS 27.6 MPH
ON SEPTEMBER 12TH 1978.

WINDS GUSTING OVER 30 MPH WERE OBSERVED ON 9 DAYS OF THE
MONTH...WHILE ON 5 DAYS THE STRONGEST GUST FOR THE DAY WAS LESS THAN
20 MPH. 13 DAYS HAD AN AVERAGE DAILY SPEED GREATER THAN 10
MPH...WHILE 17 DAYS AVERAGED LESS THAN 10 MPH. NO DENSE FOG OR
VISIBILITY BELOW ONE QUARTER MILE WAS OBSERVED...NOR WERE ANY
THUNDERSTORMS RECORDED.

FOR 2006...THERE HAVE BEEN 43 DAYS WHICH HAVE REACHED 90 DEGREES OR
HIGHER...THE 3RD MOST SINCE THE 1936 RECORD OF OF 66. THERE HAVE
BEEN 69 DAYS WITH HIGHS OF 85 OR HIGHER...TIED FOR 4TH MOST SINCE
THE RECORD 87 IN 1936. THERE HAVE BEEN 94 DAYS WITH HIGHS OF 80 OF
HIGHER...TIED FOR 3RD MOST SINCE THE RECORD 115 DAYS IN 1936.

DESPITE THE COOLER WEATHER AFTER MID-MONTH...SEPTEMBER 2006 ENDED UP
JUST SLIGHTLY ABOVE NORMAL IN TEMPERATURE...MAKING IT THE 13TH MONTH
IN A ROW TO BE WARMER THAN NORMAL. FOR 2006...THE YEAR NOW RANKS 3RD
WARMEST ON RECORD SO FAR...JUST BEHIND 1988 AND 1981.

Northeast Montana Weather Summary for the Summer of 2006
Friday, September 22nd 2006
June was generally warmer and drier than normal, although there were a few locations that were wetter than normal, including 3.89 inches at Westby, 3.55 at Port of Raymond, and 3.54 at Wolf Point. At least a dozen stations had under an inch of rain though, including only 0.25 inch at Richey, 0.34 at Content, and 0.48 at Hinsdale 21SW.

Although there wasn’t much hot weather until the last week of the month, very cool days were few too. There were a few cool days around the 10th, with numerous highs only in the 50s and lower 60s. Hinsdale 4SW and Opheim 12SE came in with highs of only 50 on the 10th, while Baylor and Westby were only 51 degrees. The hottest temperature observed during the month was 102 degrees at Malta 35S, Glasgow #2, and Malta 7E. Some very warm lows occurred late in the month too, with 72 degrees for a low at Glendive on the 31st, and 70 degrees at Glasgow #2, and Hinsdale 4SW on the 29th.

No freezing temperatures or snow were reported in June. There were about 10 reports of lows in the 30s, mainly around the 1st of the month. Redstone and Scobey 4NW had 36 degrees, while 38 degrees occurred at Plentywood, Opheim 12SE, Scobey 4NW, and Terry 21NNW on either the 1st or the 22nd.

The June outstanding severe weather event occurred on the 14th when winds exceeding 90 mph hit Glendive, causing numerous reports of damage to trees, roofs, and structures. There was several million dollars in damage from the Terry area through Glendive and into North Dakota.

July was much hotter and much drier than normal. In many cases it was second only to 1936 as the hottest July ever. Most locations recorded 100 degrees at least once during the month, and some locations had several days exceed 100. The hottest reported was 106 at Malta 35S on the 24th. Malta 35S also had a 105 degrees on the 10th, while Glendive had 105 on the 15th. Almost all highs during the month were in the 80s and 90s or higher, with very few reports of days in the 70s for highs. Hinsdale 4SW had the coolest high temperature, 71 degrees on the 5th. Also there was a high of 73 degrees at Westby and 74 degrees at Zortman on the 1st.

The coolest temperature for the entire month was 40 degrees at Scobey 4NW on the 9th. Some very warm low temperatures were recorded. Bloomfield had a low of 77 degrees on the 16th, while Cohagen, Glendive, and Vida 6NE had lows of 74 degrees. Altogether, Glendive had 7 nights where lows were in the 70s.

Rainfall was mostly less than an inch. Brockway only had a trace, the driest reported. Terry 21NNW had only 0.01 inch and Baylor 0.07 inch though. Wolf Point had the most rain, 1.54 inches, followed by 1.24 at Redstone and 1.17 at Bredette.

The July outstanding weather event for the month was the fires started by dry thunderstorms that formed around Fort Peck Lake on the 15th. The lightning caused several large fires on both sides of the lake in Garfield, Petroleum, Phillips, and Valley counties. These were the most significant lightning caused fires of the year, and burned for more than a week. Over 160,000 acres of land was burned in northeast Montana from these fires.

August was hotter and drier than normal, but unlike July, there were several brief cool spells between numerous hot spells. Westby had the most rainfall, with 2.21 inches, Bainville had 2.11, and Homestead 5SE 2.07 inches. The least amount of rain was 0.14 at Port of Raymond, 0.18 at Malta and Whitewater, and 0.20 inch at Saco.

100 degree highs were numerous during the first half of the month. Malta 35S had 104 degrees on the 8th, while Hinsdale 4SW had 103 degrees. Unlike July though, many stations had a day or two where highs were only in the 60s. Zortman and Opheim 12SE both came in with 61 degrees for the lowest high of the month, Opheim 12SE also had another day with 62 degrees for a high, while Malta 7E had a 63 degree day. These all occurred on the 17th or 31st.

These were also several lows into the 30s too. Redstone had 33 degrees on the 31st, Opheim 10N, and Scobey 4NW had lows of 35 degrees on the 14th. The warmest low temperature reported was 75 degrees at Glasgow #2 on the 9th.

The significant weather event for August was to significant drought conditions that the region plunged into. When the summer started, we had no drought conditions at all, but through July and August, northeast Montana plummeted into the severe drought category on the National Drought Monitor. Glasgow had its driest summer on record, with only 1.73 inches of rain. The previous record is from 1930 when Glasgow had 1.93 inches. It was also the 5th warmest on record for Glasgow, with records going back to 1893.

Spring Blizzar Continues
Wednesday, April 19th 2006
GLENDIVE, Mont. (AP) - A spring snowstorm has downed power lines and made highway travel dangerous in parts of Eastern Montana. Sections of Interstate 94 and state Highway Seven are closed this morning.

Weather forecasters say blizzard-like conditions are expected to continue in some areas until at least mid-day today.

Interstate 94 is closed between Glendive and the North Dakota line. Also closed is state Highway Seven from Wibaux to Ekalaka.

Meteorologist Don Simonsen, with the National Weather Service in Glasgow, says there's been a lot of heavy, wet snow, with more to come.

The Weather Service at Glasgow had reports of winds gusting at more than 50 miles per hour, including a 71 mile-per-hour gust in Dawson County.

Visibility in some areas was reduced to a quarter-to half-mile.

Record Warm January
Friday, February 3rd 2006
January 2006 was the warmest January ever observed in Glasgow. The average temperature of 29.2 degrees broke the previous record of 26.6 degrees set in 1992. Glasgow data dates back to 1893. There were also 28 days with highs 30 or warmer...breaking the previous January record of 27 in 1919. There were 17 days with lows of 20 or warmer...breaking the previous January record of 11 in 1984 and 1990.
Mother Nature Very Gentle to Northeast Montana
Wednesday, February 1st 2006
This past January was by far the warmest on record at Glasgow. The warm weather came at an especially good time as the cost of heating is at record levels across much of the United States. What caused the unusually warm weather? Since the middle of December there has been a very strong jet stream, which at times, has originated from the tropical Pacific. The active Pacific jet has brought unseasonably warm weather to just about all of the lower 48 states. During most of the month, the arctic air was confined to Siberia and parts of Asia. Late in the month the cold air finally was felt across the western hemisphere, with 40 to 60 below zero temperatures experienced across interior Alaska, the Yukon, and much of arctic Canada. As the Pacific Jet remained strong, the arctic air was not able to spill south into the United States. The only area to have near normal temperatures was across southern Florida.

The warmest weather in the United States this past January was across eastern Montana, and the Dakotas into Minnesota, with average temperature of up to 18 degrees above normal. Many areas across the northern tier of the United States had their warmest January on Record.

Glasgow had the warmest January on record, with an average temperature of 29.2 degrees, which was 18.4 degrees above the 30-year average of 10.9 degrees. The previous record of 26.6 degrees was set in 1992.

Here are the 10 warmest January averages on record at Glasgow:

2006: 29.0
1992: 26.6
1944: 25.4
1981: 25.2
1958: 25.0
1987: 24.0
1990: 23.2
1948: 22.1
1986: 22.0
1921: 21.4

By comparison, here are the 10 coldest January averages on record:

1950: -14.2
1937: -8.8
1969: -7.0
1979: -4.2
1930: -3.1
1929: -2.3
1978: -2.1
1936: -1.5
1966: -1.2
1943: -0.7

As far as temperature records go, there was one new record high temperature. On the 25th the high of 49 degrees broke the previous record of 47, set in 1932. On the 30th the high of 48 degrees tied the record which was last set in 1992. There was also one event where we broke the record of the warmest low temperature. On the 11th, the low temperature of 30 degrees broke the previous record of 29 degrees, set in 1987.

A few other interesting facts about this past January. It was the first time since 1981 without any sub-zero temperatures during the month of January, and only the 3rd time on record without a sub-zero temperature observed during the month of January. There were a total of 13 days with a high temperature of 40 degrees or above. Only 1919 and 1944 had more days above 40 degrees during the month of January. There were also a total of 14 days with a minimum temperature above 20 degrees, the most on record.

So, what is in store for the remainder of the winter? There is much uncertainly, due in part to the development of a La Nina, which is expected to persist for at least the next 3 to 6 months.

What is La Nina? It is a periodic cooling of ocean surface temperatures in the central and east-central equatorial Pacific that occurs every 3 to 5 year or so. Usually, during a La Nina temperatures in February and March are below average across northeast Montana. So far, however, the overriding factor in our warm weather has been the strong pacific jet stream.

There are indications that the weather pattern will be undergoing some changes during the next 7-10 days. Most of the longer range computer guidance indicates that a large high pressure ridge will build across the western third of the United States. This pattern would shut down the strong Pacific jet, but would keep temperatures on the mild side across the area.

Sometimes, when this pattern gets established; it will retrograde or move from east to west. If this were to occur, the large high pressure would move out into the Pacific Ocean, and could potentially open the door to much colder weather for middle and late February. Long range computer models have shown such a transition before, but the Pacific jet ended up winning out and it has remained the dominate factor in our warm weather. Time will tell, but there are at least some indications of a possible change toward colder weather later this month.
