SHRINE BOWL
All-star players to face off at Shrine Bowl

GREAT FALLS, Mont. (AP) - The East-West Shrine football
game isn't the first all-star contest for many of the
participants.
In fact, 42 of those who will compete tonight at Memorial
Stadium in Great Falls played in an all-star football game
earlier this summer.
Twenty-five Shrine players helped Montana roll to a 54-14
victory over North Dakota in the Knights of Columbus Badlands
Bowl, on June 21 in Miles City.
Two weeks earlier, a dozen Shrine players competed in the
Class B All-Star Game in Billings.
On May 31, five Shrine players participated in a pair of
all-star tilts - three in the Bob Cleverley Class C game in Butte
and two in the Six-Man game in Highwood.
The East-West Shrine Bowl is the nation's longest-running
high school all-star game, and raises money for the Shriner's
Hospital for Children in Spokane, Wash.

RODEO RUCKUS
Animal rights group targets popular Wyo. rodeo

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) - As the annual Cheyenne Frontier Days
gets underway this weekend in Wyoming, the "Daddy of 'Em All"
rodeo finds itself fighting off allegations of animal cruelty.
Animal-rights activists want certain rodeo events banned,
saying they are cruel to the rodeo stock. Organizers and
competitors are calling it an attack on Western tradition that
seeks to ban rodeos entirely.
The culture clash comes amid a national debate on the
treatment of sporting animals following the death of a race horse
in the Kentucky Derby.
One animal-rights activist has been aggressively targeting
Frontier Days, in the hopes of forcing change.
The campaign by Steve Hindi of Showing Animals Respect and
Kindness prompted the rock band Matchbox Twenty to cancel a
scheduled performance at this year's Frontier Days entertainment
lineup.
Cheyenne Frontier Days spokesman Bob Budd says the rodeo
has strict rules to protect the welfare of rodeo animals.
He and other rodeo supporters say the events represent what
occurs on ranches across the West, and that the animals are
treated well.

BIG SKY STATE GAMES
Big Sky State Games this weekend in Billings

BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) - The 23rd annual Big Sky State Games
take place this weekend in Billings.
Executive Director Karen Sanford Gall says the 2008 games
likely will be at least as big as last year's, when more than
10,000 people took part.
Wyoming competitors have been invited to join the games
this year. Sanford Gall says Wyoming has held its own winter and
occasional spring games, but hasn't held a summer competition for
a number of years.
Opening ceremonies for the Big Sky State Games are set for
tonight at Daylis Stadium. Gates open at 5:30 p.m., with the
parade of athletes starting at 7:30 p.m.
Briana Scurry will light the cauldron to officially start
the games. Scurry is a USA Women's Soccer goalie and alternative
player for the USA national team at the Olympics in Beijing.

Selvig announces 2008-09 Lady Griz schedule

MISSOULA, Mont. (AP) - University of Montana women's
basketball coach Robin Selvig has announced the Lady Griz's
2008-09 schedule.

the road. Eight will be at home, including two at the 29th annual
Lady Griz Holiday Classic, while three are neutral-site games in
Cancun, Mexico.
The 16-game Big Sky Conference schedule has Montana-Montana
State day-night doubleheaders with the schools' men's teams in
