(AP) - The Bozeman High athletics director is recommending that Brad Ruston return as girls' basketball coach. Ruston was head coach for the Hawks from 1989 to 1998, leading the team to three state championships. He was an assistant to boys' coach Mike Cole from 1999-2007. Ruston was an assistant to outgoing girls' coach Brooke Svendsen during the 2007-08 season. Svendsen is moving to Colorado, where her husband has taken a job. The school board must approve Ruston's appointment at a meeting next Monday. Ruston takes over a program that finished third at state last season after winning the prior two Class AA championships. The Hawks are losing seven seniors, including all five starters. MSU BILLINGS-FISH DJ Fish of Browning signs with MSU Billings men's basketball BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) - Browning forward DJ Fish has signed a letter of intent to play basketball at Montana State-Billings. MSU-Billings athletics director Gary Gray announced the signing yesterday. The 6-foot-5 Fish led Browning to the state Class A championship and was named the state tournament MVP. He had 25 points, eight rebounds and nine steals in his team's 72-52 win over Butte Central for the state title. He is also an all-state cross country runner. WESTERN SIGNS Helena High standout signs with Western basketball DILLON, Mont. (AP) - Montana Western men's basketball coach Steve Keller has announced the signing of Helena High forward Grant Fink. The 6-foot-7 Fink averaged 17 points and 10.3 rebounds for the Bengals, earning first-team all-state honors. He also was selected to play in this summer's Montana-Wyoming All-Star series. Keller says Fink is a player with great size and athleticism. Fink's older brother, Garrett, also plays for the Bulldogs. Keller has also signed 6-foot-3 guard Cody Thueringer of Kent, Washington. He's transferring from Highline Community College in Des Moines, Washington. MSU BILLINGS SIGNS MSU Billings golf signs two recruits BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) - Montana State-Billings women's golf coach Kevin Woodin has announced the signing of two in-state recruits. Erin Heaney of Anaconda and Libby Rutz of Billings have signed with the Yellowjackets. Heaney earned all-state honors as a senior, finishing second at divisionals and in the Top 10 at the state Class A tournament last fall. (AP) - The list of Montana high school wrestling coaches who have resigned after the 2007-08 season continues to grow. In Class AA, the losses include Jeff Thompson at Kalispell Flathead, which has won four of the past five state championships. Also leaving in Class AA are Jim Street, who coached at Butte for 25 seasons; Rob Bazant, who has coached at Billings West for 18 seasons; and Joel Auers of Great Falls Russell after six seasons. Glasgow wrestling coach Mark Johnston recently resigned to accept a position as assistant principal at Ronan High School. He's been the wrestling coach at Glasgow for 17 years, winning five Class B-C state championships, including the past two. (AP) - Four high school coaches will be inducted into the Montana Coaches Association Hall of Fame this summer. Those to be honored are Mike Cole, Lyndon Conroy, Jackie Fuller and Jeff Strickland. Cole's boys' basketball teams at Bozeman have won five state championships in 22 seasons. Conroy was the head coach for the Colstrip boys' and girls track teams for 14 years, during which his boys team won five state championships while the girls won three. Fuller has led the Whitefish volleyball team to five state championships in 13 seasons. And Strickland has been the head golf coach at Three Forks for 19 seasons, during which his girls team has won five state championships and the boys team one. The four will be honored on August 7 at the MCA Awards Ceremony as part of the annual MCA Clinic in Great Falls. MONTANA-DELANEY Delaney named assistant football coach at Montana MISSOULA, Mont. (AP) - Montana football coach Bobby Hauck has named Mick Delaney the new running backs coach for the Grizzlies. Delaney is a Butte native who has been running backs coach at Colorado State for the past 14 years. He has also coached at Montana Western, been an athletics director at Montana Tech and an assistant coach at both Montana and Montana State. Delaney worked for coach Sonny Lubick at both Montana State and Colorado State. Hauck calls Delaney an outstanding addition to the staff. He has already started his coaching duties with the Grizzlies. Delaney replaces Mike Hudson as running backs coach for the Griz. Hudson will now coach the secondary, after Tim Hauck left to take a similar position at UCLA. MSU BILLINGS-HODGE MSU Billings signs 6-foot-9 post from Oregon BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) - Montana State-Billings athletics director Gary Gray has announced the signing of 6-foot-9 Brad Hodge to the men's basketball team. Gray is announcing the recruits while the school looks for a men's basketball coach. Hodge is a native of Hillsboro, Oregon, and played at Grays Harbor College in Aberdeen, Washington. Prior to that, he redshirted at Salt Lake Community College. Hodge helped Hillsboro High School to a runner-up finish at state during the 2002-03 season and earned first-team all-metro honors after the 2004-05 season. Two other Grays Harbor players, Ryan Meehan and Lance Anderson, have signed with the Yellowjackets. ROCKY SIGNS Rocky volleyball signs two from Canada BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) - Rocky Mountain volleyball coach Laurie Kelly has announced the signing of two hitters from Canada. Brittany Hodgson of Manor, Saskatchewan and Sara Brunner of Redcliff, Alberta have signed with the Bears. Hodgson's club team, the Southeast Stingers, are ranked first in Saskatchewan. She helped Manor High School to a second-place finish in the provincial championships. Brunner played at McCoy High School in Medicine Hat, where she helped her team finish second in the 3A Alberta Provincial Championships. She was named her league's MVP and the MVP of her club team.
